By the late 18th century the demand for portraits had spread from the aristocracy to the mercantile and professional classes. Sarah Moses Levy, wife of Samuel Levy, poses in an elegant lace cap and collar and wears a miniature of her young son Chapman. The intriguing pair of portraits have stayed together for over two hundred years, a testament to the strength of the bond between mother and son.
