Some time after their wedding, Joshua and Phebe Lazarus traveled with Joshua’s sister Emma on an extended tour of Europe, where the French artist, Amélie Dautel D’Aubigny, painted their portraits. In these finely detailed miniatures, Phebe and Emma wear identical decollete gowns, with their hair drawn up in braids and ringlets. The costumes may have been provided by the artist, or painted after the sitting.
