Havdalah spice box of Rabbi Jacob Raisin and Jane Lazarus Raisin Warsaw, Poland, ca. 1810–1830 Silver Private collection

This spice box belonged to Dr. Jacob S. Raisin, rabbi of Beth Elohim from 1915 to 1944, and his wife, Jane Lazarus Raisin, a descendant of the Lazarus and Hart families. To mark the transition between sacred and secular time as the Sabbath comes to an end, Jews observe the ceremony of havdalah, or “difference.” They light a twisted candle and pass around a spice box, fragrant with cloves.
