The ark of a synagogue is an enclosure for the congregation’s Torah scrolls. Shavuot, or the Feast of Weeks, commemorates the giving of the Torah to the Israelites at Mt. Sinai. Falling in the Jewish month of Sivan—at the end of May or beginning of June—the festival also celebrates the first gathering of fruits and produce.
